The Cornwall Outdoor Recreation Area (Cora) is a community-driven project in Cornwall to transform a town-owned, 2-acre lot adjacent to
the school into a multi-use recreation space. The plan includes pickleball courts, a tennis court, ADA-compliant walking paths, a pavilion, a parking lot, benches, and landscaped surroundings, with the potential to host an outdoor classroom and other amenities. The
initiative started from a desire for more pickleball carts and grew into a broader recreation concept after a Key Grant brought in national design and communications experts who conducted a town survey to refine the
concept. The design retains core elements—pickleball and tennis courts, ADA features, a pavilion, a parking area, and benches—while adapting dimensions in collaboration with the school for outdoor classroom use.
Funding progressed through a 2-to-1 grant match, ARPA funds, and multiple grants, with no Cornwall taxpayer dollars used beyond the ARPA
contribution. The project faced wetlands setbacks on the east side, leading to path redirection, and insured the site would drain properly through a required stormwater system.

 

Groundbreaking occurred in April 2025 with strong community turnout, marking the official kickoff. A team of Cornwall volunteers, including Gail and Liz have steered the project, seeking to keep maintenance minimal and to eventually hand the site to town management, largely run by volunteers and supported by educational signage and community workshops. The site will be open to the public, with plans for naming
opportunities (e.g., the pavilion and benches/trees) and ongoing fundraising, including a grand opening once complete. A Playtime Scheduler app may be used to manage court usage, modeled after systems at nearby towns.

After navigating wetlands, stormwater requirements, and funding challenges, the project has made substantial progress, including a completed parking area and courtyards surrounding a soon-to-be-installed pavilion and benches. With strong
volunteer leadership led by key figures like Gail and Liz, significant donor contributions (including Carrera for concrete) and tree planting, and educational components, the site aims to become a durable, accessible, and welcoming public resource. Plans for naming
opportunities (notably the Longies/Longing Pavilion) and community workshops reflect a commitment to local involvement. The site is
expected to be publicly accessible upon completion, managed through volunteer stewardship with potential involvement from the Cornwall Rec Committee, and governed by a schedule system to ensure inclusive use for all skill levels. A grand opening will follow once the final work— including lighting, line painting, and pavilion installation—is completed.
