Logan is celebrating a birthday and was rewarded with a tuneful serenade.
 
ANNOUNCEMENTS:
 
Auction--Begins in just a couple of weeks.  See Geoff or Maureen for a list of items that still need to be solicited.  They may be brought to a meeting or dropped off on the porch of 5 Stonegate Drive in Middlebury.  Auction begins May 3. 
 
Green Up Day--Dustin will be circulating a sign-up sheet for Green Up Day, which is May 4.   He will put out information as to when and where he needs helpers.
 
Officer Nominations for next year--Nancy announced the slate of officers the nomination committee has come up with for the Rotary year beginning July 1.  President, Betsy McCarthy; President Elect, Maureen Conrad; Vice President, Bill Kernan; Secretary, Jim Needham; Treasurer, Geoff Conrad.  These names will be placed in nomination at next week's meeting, at which time nominations may also be made from the floor.  The nominating committee consists of Nancy, Betsy, Maureen, Lyn, Tom, Jason, and T.
 
Support for a student from Kenya--Cari read a letter from Johanna Nichols in support of a college student she is hosting from Kenya who has an opportunity to attend the Middlebury School of the Environment in China.  Cari also read a letter from the student, named Amos, who explained his need for financial support in order to take advantage of this opportunity.  Ben made a motion to award Amos a grant of $900 toward his expenses.  Approved on a voice vote, with two nay votes.
 
Golf Tournament--coming on May 17 at the Middlebury College golf course.  More details to follow.
 
District Conference--there is still time to register for the district conference in Sherbrooke, May 3-5.  See Eric if you are interested.

Fran--glad to be back from his tax season "vacation."
Scott--welcome to Brandy and Doug, potential members.
Spence--thanks to Jim for taking on the role of secretary.  Glad to see Ulli at a meeting.
T--back from an instructive 4,200 mile trek through southeastern US, visiting Civil War sites.
Jack--selling tickets to the May 7 ham supper in support of the Fire Department. 
Eric--was at the district assembly with David Clark.  Twelve kids participated in the speech contest.
 
CLASSIFICATION TALK:
 
John Zahn talked about his varied career in the hospitality business, beginning with Sunday dinners (feasts) at the home of his Italian grandmother.  His uncle showed him the behind the scenes workings of the Waldorf Astoria.  After ten years in New York City John moved to Vermont, where he has spent 25 years in various aspects of the industry.  His wife works for One Credit Union.  They have three sons, and John volunteered with the Boy Scouts as they were growing up.
 
GALA DINNER:  Scott showed a video of part of an inspirational speech by Chris Waddell, a paraplegic who will be the featured speaker at our Gala Dinner on June 14.  Chris will make a presentation for a wider audience that afternoon at the Town Hall Theater.
