Guest Speakers- Mike Carrier (DEI)

Eric introduced Mike Carrier, previous District Governor!

Mike discussed the importance of DEI - Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in Rotary and provided a foundational overview to create a common ground.

In January 2019, the DEI statement was developed by a task-force led by Valerie Wafer. Overtime, efforts have evolved and Rotary is looking for ways to build engagement and support for all members.

  • Diversity - People of all backgrounds, experiences, and identities regardless of their age, ethnicity, race, color, abilities, religion, socioeconomic status, culture, sex, sexual orientation, or gender identity.
  • Equity - Carefully considering how to provide differing levels of support, opportunities, and resources so participants have a welcoming and productive experience.
  • Inclusion - Creating experiences in which all people are welcomed, respected, and valued.
Mike explained how every group is diverse in various ways, both visibly and invisibly. Additionally, Mike spoke about the difference between Equity vs Equality and that we do not all need the same thing - but need different supports to achieve the same outcome.

Activity - if you have time and would like to learn more about your implicit biases that we all have - please visit the Harvard Project Implicit at https://implicit.harvard.edu/implicit/

Mike mentioned the acronym FLEX: Together this focuses on creating a safe space and members are able to bring all that they are to Rotary!
  • Focus
  • Learn
  • Engage
  • EXpand
Lastly, Mike discussed how Diversity is a FACT, Equity is a CHOICE, and Inclusion is an ACTION. All these aspects are crucial to Rotary!

Thank you, Mike!
