Guest Speaker - Eric Denu, Rotary Foundation
Eric announced that November is Foundation Month and highlighted the Rotary Magazine that always does a great job highlighting projects around the world funded through the foundation. (You should take a look :) )
The Foundation concentrates on seven focus areas including peacebuilding and conflict prevention; disease prevention and treatment; water, sanitation, and hygiene; maternal and child health; basic education and literacy; and community economic development. Did you know there are also Peace Centers around the world?
Eric explained how the Annual Fund/ Share Program works. When you make a donation, the money is held for 3 years and the interest on the donation helps support the foundation operations. After 3 years, 5% is kept and the rest goes back for awards, projects, programs. This means that 47.5% goes to the District which is used for District Grants and 47.5% goes to the World Fund for the endowment and the 7 areas of focus. (Funding from the District helps support the District Grant Projects and Exchange Students. )
You can donate online and designate what you would like it to go towards. You can do Rotary Direct and do an autopay with your credit card and if you need your Member ID # - it can be found on the back of the Rotary Magazine. If you want to give to Tom Plumb's project - you need the grant number.
There are different recognition levels based on how much you give and how many people give. There is the "Every Rotarian, Every Year" Designation in which each member gives $25/year. (We get this as a club, because it is paid as a lump sum, but not because everyone donates). As a member, there is also the Paul Harris Award in which you have donated $1,000 (over-time).
Liz Smith spoke about why she donates to the foundation. As a 3rd generation Rotarian (first female), her family lived through Polio as her brothers at 4 & 5 years old were both affected. Both brothers have lasting impacts. Liz trusts this organization and believes in the work Rotary does!
Eric reiterated this is the only organization to mostly eradicate a virus.
