Polio Awareness

 

Kati did a great job running the booth at the car show. We collected $70 for polio.
John auctioned off 2 gallons of cider to add $40 to the polio jar.
Eric mentioned that October 24 is world polio day. He will circulate a link to a presentation on the polio campaign by prominent Rotary leaders.

Announcements

John encouraged members to support our corporate sponsors, who contribute around $40,000 to Rotary. Sponsors are mostly solicited by Tim and Scott.

David reminded members that the auction is on now and closes at 9 PM on Sunday.

Friendship Breakfast: Scheduled for November 1 at the Inn. Let Paul know how many prospective members may attend.

Possible evening social at Flatbread: John will send an email if arrangements can be made for a social at Flatbread from 5 to 7 next Wednesday.

Paul Harris Dinner: Will take place on November 15 at the Waybury Inn. Watch for more information to come.

Food distribution: Geoff got three volunteers to help with the final food distribution, which will be in Shoreham from 1:00 to 5:00 on October 26.

Tent: David mentioned that Ben and Jason put up the tent for Rebecca‘s wedding last Thursday. Ben and Sem took the tent down Saturday. Sem is looking for more experiences with American families. Contact Liz M if you are able to spend some time with Sem.

Liz S wants to do a project for the Parent Child center this year. Several people offered support for the idea. More information to come.

Maureen introduced Cindy Bruzzese, Executive Director and Certified Clinical Ethicist at the Vermont Ethics Network (VEN)

Cindy works with people who are not able to speak for themselves and encourages advance care planning to deal with the “what if‘s” and medical decision making. She helps navigate the complex situations when the right thing to do is not obvious. She also works with the Vermont legislature to craft policies to help in this process. She helps resolve the difference between what an advance directive says, and what the person with decision making power feels is right. Her focus is on the patient’s needs, not necessarily on the family’s desires. All she can do is make recommendations, which the family is free to disregard. From the age of 18 people need to designate a person to make end of life decisions to avoid family conflict ending up in court. Advance directives need to be reviewed periodically.
